SV Caribbean Soul - A Traveling Family Story

Why this website?

Hello adventure-seeking families and free spirits!
Have you ever felt like there’s more to life than the daily grind? We certainly did. That’s why we packed up our lives, grabbed our kids, and embarked on an incredible journey across the globe. Our mission? To explore different cultures, immerse ourselves in new experiences, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

We believe that the world is meant to be seen through our own eyes, not limited by borders or currencies. By sailing from one destination to another, we’ve liberated ourselves from the constraints of a single country’s politics and embraced the freedom to fully embrace life.

For Ryan, this adventure was born out of a deep longing to reconnect with nature and break free from the shackles of the 9-5 routine. And as a family, we all agreed – it was time to chart our own path.

So why are we sharing our story on this website? Well, for two reasons…

Firstly, let’s face it – money makes the world go round. By showcasing our journey online, we hope to inspire others to break free from societal norms and carve out their own extraordinary lives. It’s not quite being a rockstar (although that would be pretty cool), but it’s about empowering others to chase their dreams in their own unique way.

Secondly, we want you to join us on this wild ride. Through our online shop, you can find quality items that reflect our adventurous spirit. If you’re feeling particularly inspired by what we do, you can support us through Patreon and be part of fueling our creativity video after video. And don’t forget to follow along on Facebook and Instagram as we document every step of our exciting journey.

We know not everyone will understand or support what we’re doing – but that’s okay! We’re building a community of like-minded individuals who share our love for exploration and embracing everything this crazy world has to offer.

So whether you’ve been bitten by the travel bug, yearn for a life of freedom, or simply share our passion for creating unforgettable memories – we hope to meet you one day. Together, let’s watch the sunset after a day filled with sun, sea, and the magic of living life on our own terms.

Adventure awaits!

We’re an everyday family who decided we needed more from life and for our kids and set off on an adventure to see the world, its cultures and experience how different life can be.

We all experience things through our own eyes and are influenced mostly by our surroundings. By sailing around and being less and less affected by a single countries politics and a single currency we felt it would be the best way to experience the few years we have with our kids and give them the best shot at a happy fulfilled life.

Aside from that (I) Ryan couldn’t be tied down anymore and had a nagging, a dream to cross the ocean, to be more in tune with the world and mother nature and really experience life past the 9-5 slog that we are almost all born into.

As family we all have our say in our future and as long as we all vote for travel and mother nature we’ll be continuing our journey.

So why this website? Why Social media and Youtube. Well for 2 reasons.

Firstly we still live on planet earth and need money to get by, what better way to expand on this dream life we’re working on creating than by showcasing it and inspiring others to break free from the mold, the matrix way of life and get compensated by it. I see it as only second best to becoming a rockstar or professional musician, but with the upside of maybe inspiring others to do the same in their own ways.

We have an online shop where you can buy a few good quality items. We have a Patreon page where you can support our creativity by donating per video we produce if you feel inspired. We have a Facebook and Instagram page where we try to stay up to date with our locations and findings.

Lastly we have each other in this crazy world and we know not everyone reading this will agree / like or support us, but we also know that we are slowly going to be growing our group, our tribe, our people and our friends. That’s why we are doing this and that’s why we will continue. Hopefully we’ll get to meet you all one day and watch the sunset together after a day in the sea and sun.

Lots of Love from us!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you afford to travel full time?
  • Ryan still works and manages a full service digital marketing team focused on Amazon Sellers which by the way if you’re an Amazon Seller you should get in touch.
  • We try to keep expenses as low as possible by living on anchor when sailing through the islands be it Bahamas or the Caribbean.
  • We homeschool our Kids, Kai and Azura which we believe is giving them the best shot at a great life in this crazy place called earth.
Is it expensive to travel on a boat?

We live on a monohull currently and try to do as much of the repairs and upkeep ourselves which keeps costs lower but yes things break and it can all add up. Living on a trawler / motorboat with multiple engines or a catamaran can add up to more costs when you buy an older boat as they have more expensive parts to replace and motorboats need way more fuel.

Did you do much sailing before you set off on this adventure?

We sailed as a family over the weekends and holidays in South Africa and Ryan got his yachtmasters offshore before we left but as a family and group we had to eventually untie the lines and do some travelling together to get it all under control.

Do you sail with just the 4 of you or do you get help?

We had help when we crossed the South Atlantic from friends Ricus, Tyrone and Alex. Once in the Caribbean we often had the crew from @7setsail with us and they constantly join us for lengthier sailing adventures as well as just chilling out in the bahamas when we’re there.

Who inspired you to do this?

Ryan was always a water baby with salt water flowing through his veins but sailing wasnt ever a part of his life until he came across Liz Clark who sailed around in Swell (https://swellvoyage.com/about/about-liz/) who managed to combine sailing and surfing and it just all seemed so perfect. He eventually managed to convince the rest of us to take the plunge and we havent looked back.

Our Boat - SV Caribbean Soul

For both the Caribbean Circuit and the Bahamas Circuit a “Blue Water Boat” probably isn’t totally needed as you are not very far from land at any one point in that space. With that being said we do have a center cockpit monohull 48ft long and just shy of a 15ft beam designed by Award winning designer Phil Southwell. She’s super solidly built and we have quite a few comforts aboard although not over the top.

We have a very solid cruising boat that has some speed to her as well as comfort. She’s been an incredible home to us and continues to be.  We are very happy with how she sails where we’ve been able to go with her.

We have a performance spade rudder and encapsulated keel. We have a bow thruster and 2 electric and 2 standard winches in the cockpit. We have running rigging to the base of the mast and 2 winches on the mast.

Down below we have 2 heads / showers, 3 cabins, a lounge (settee) and a galley (kitchen). I also have a desk dedicated to working.

We use Victron power for almost all our power needs coupled with 800 use-able amp hours of lithium batteries (Freedom Won).

We have 1500 wats of solar with a potential 60 amps of wind generators as well as a Diesel Generator (Westerbeke).

Our motor is a 2006 Volvo Penta D2-75 with just on 1000 hours. Our sails are in a fair condition and our rigging constantly checked and anything that needs attention is replaced at any point. We dont push our boat like racing boats are pushed because we dont like to pay for broken parts and they become very expensive quickly. I do enjoy our ability to sail in light winds and the Bahamas so far has given us the best sailing conditions. We generally do between 5 and 9 knots of speed depending wind direction and strength and try to go out in as mild conditions as we can possibly control.

We make our own water when at anchor with our water maker and in general have a very green footprint aboard Caribbean Soul.
